Windows 8: The Fears Are Overblown
When Microsoft release a beta of version of Windows 8 I was skeptical of how user friendly this new operating system would be. I was even more skeptical that Microsoft is going the Apple's route which is more control over look and feel. I was never fan of a close system because I enjoy the idea of customizing my hardware and software.
I download a beta copy of Windows 8 and I learned how to use the operating system in 5 minutes. Yes you read it correctly 5 minutes. I don't understand the overblown fears of how most users will not like using Windows 8. I do admit I am a power user of computers but this operating system is so simple it's comical that anyone can struggle with using it.
The look and feel is a radical departure from the old icon desktop user interface look. Who cares how it looks, what matters that it works and works efficiently. Secondly I love the idea of live title. If I need to know the weather forecast, my local or global news, emails, today's agenda and stock quotes all you have to do is click the title and simply setup the content you want. What's so hard about that? Now granted Windows 8 is best suited for touch screens but I had no problem navigating with a mouse.
My next PC will definitely be a touch screen. It is more natural to scroll left to right and navigate a touch screen with your finger than a mouse. Although it really isn't to difficult to do with a mouse. I tested a HP Touch Smart PC and I was blown away. The HP PC was smooth, fast, stable and very responsive. It took my 5 minutes to learn how to use and navigate this computer. The only negative is price but I am sure they will become cheaper over time.
Maybe I am old school or too traditional but I still enjoy the idea of storing my own files locally on my computer and share them or back them up in the cloud. I like the idea of freedom and controlling my own applications, files and content that I purchased and licensed to have. The cloud is a wondering concept where I can be really mobile with my content. Having a smart phone that links both to the cloud and PC is great. However the cloud and closed architecture reminds me of big brother.
Anyhow fears of Microsoft Windows 8 are way overblown. Maybe people just fear change and this fear is manifesting itself with complaints over Windows 8. I say go try a new desktop, hybrid laptop/tablet, ultra book, tablet or the new Windows 8 Phone with an open mind and some patience. You might be pleasantly surprised.
