Albert Einstein was famous conducting thought experiments. Thought experiments are basically day dreaming but on steroids. Today I am having a thought experiment on the impact of self-driving cars.
- Truck drivers, cabby drives, uber drivers, car services drivers, limousine drivers and bus drivers will be rendered obsolete. Some may transition into delivery roles like taking inventor off the delivery truck or pizza car. Basically carrying inventory until robots are able to the job.
- Traffic jams may come to an end. Computers will communicate with each other via a networked road to determine speed and directions relative to other cars and weather conditions.
- Speeding tickets will disappear. Since computers will handle the driving, there will be no logical reason for the car to go over the speed limit.
- Variable speed limits. Speed limit will be adjustable depending on the car volume, weather conditions and road conditions.
- Mobile businesses will be the normal: Doctors will make house calls and carry their equipment to do checkups, blood tests and examinations. Barber shops too will be mobile, a barber will travel to you to cut your hair. Dentists can do basic checkups, cleanings, and examines.
- Car ownership for the average person will be a thing of the past. Cars will be cheaper and less luxurious looking because there will be no need to own a car because you can simply request one via smart phone.
- Less fuel consumption: because computers will be able to optimize route, acceleration/deceleration and velocity. Also they will have less aesthetic appeal and weight much less with efficiency first look.
- Subway systems in the less dense cities will become a thing of the past.
- Property values in cities and very close to cities will fall.
- Working day will start on the commute to the office and the work day will end on the commute home.
- Auto racing will still use humans because auto racing with self-driving cars defeats the purpose of having the race.
- Auto related deaths will dramatically drops, especially drunk driving deaths.
- Insurance companies profits will drop.
- Military planners or fighting wars will become faster. Computers don’t need rest like human do so more demanding attack and defense strategies come into play.
- Less people will die from wars (I really hope so).
- Human illness such as diabetes, depression, cardio vascular related illnesses, heart disease and osteoporosis will increase dramatically.
