Gold Best Performing Asset Over The last 3,000 Years

Hello everyone, I came across an interesting post about gold being the best performing asset of the last 3,000 years.  I am not sure this person was able to gather the asset price of gold of the last 3,000 years and translate it to dollars.  Nevertheless I think it is an interesting thought experiment. Officers in the Roman Army, those guys got paid.
